Sustainable packaging comes down to wasting less and keeping materials in the game, not the landfill. That’s the idea behind the Nine Golden Design Rules. Created by the Consumer Goods Forum and Canada Plastics Pact (CPP), with help from big players like Loblaws and How2Recycle, these rules help brands design packaging that’s recyclable, efficient, and easy for customers to handle… all by 2025.
At AlphaPoly, we live by these rules every day, creating everything from custom stand up pouches and resealable dog food bags to eco-friendly packaging and sustainable packaging materials. We keep both your product and the planet in mind.
Here’s what the best packaging gets right:
- Enhance PET Recycling Valuable
When it comes to PET bottles, clear really is better. Stick with transparent, uncolored PET (or a transparent blue or green) so it actually gets recycled. And don’t forget the labels and adhesives. Using How2Recycle-compliant materials keeps the stream clean and valuable.
- Eliminate Problematic Materials
Some plastics just aren’t worth the trouble. Materials like PVC, PVDC, PS, PETG, EPS, carbon black, and oxo-degradables make recycling a nightmare. The Canada Plastics Pact is pushing to get rid of them for good reason.
- Boost HDPE and PP Recycling
Those rigid HDPE and polypropylene bottles and jars you see everywhere? They work a lot better when they’re made from mono-materials and designed for North America’s recycling infrastructure.
- Improve Flexible Packaging Recyclability
Snack packaging, zipper pouches, roll stock films. Flexible doesn’t have to mean unrecyclable. Choosing mono-material PE, keeping inks to a minimum, and designing for store drop-off programs all help.
- Reduce Plastic Overwraps
If your product doesn’t need it, skip the plastic overwrap. Your customers won’t miss it, and neither will the landfill.
- Minimize Headspace in Flexible Packaging
You know those bags that feel half-empty? Not great for anyone. Keeping headspace to 30% or less uses less material, ships better, and just feels smarter.
- Optimize B2B Packaging
Business-to-business packaging needs a rethink too. Adding post-consumer recycled (PCR) content or switching to reuse models cuts virgin plastic out of the picture.
- Provide Clear Recycling Instructions
Recycling only works if people know what to do. Clear, standardized How2Recycle labels tell consumers exactly how to dispose of your packaging.
- Increase Post-Consumer Recycled Content
The CPP has a target: 30% PCR in packaging by 2025. We can hit that goal without sacrificing performance or quality.
Why It Matters
Customers care about sustainability, and the Golden Design Rules lay out the path: 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging, and a 50% recycling rate in North America by 2025.
We’re here to help you hit those numbers. Whether it’s custom printed packaging, resealable barrier-proof pouches, or innovative flexible packaging solutions, AlphaPoly creates designs that perform on every level.
